A brand new rivalry between two country powerhouses commenced over the last weekend in March as Vida Tennis Mildura took on Vida Tennis Swan Hill.

Both sides having the unique opportunity to play most of their tennis on the rare grass courts. The first installment of the Vida Challenge was played in Swan Hill on a beautiful day with no wind and plenty of sun. Both teams fielded a strong side of under 10’s 12’s and 14’s to try and hold the first ever Vida Challenge perpetual trophy.

In the U10’s Mildura picked an inexperienced yet talented squad, elevating all players from the Hot Shots Leagues in which they were going really well. Swan Hill opted for a more mature team with a little more experience and this strategic move paid off for the boys and girls from the Hill as they only dropped three matches. All players were having fun all day with a particular mention of the sportsmanship in this age group which was outstanding.

The under 12’s saw some closer action if all formats. It was common place to see matches in the third set tiebreaker with players seemingly trying to play as long as possible! Making the most of the front show courts, the under 12’s put on a marvellous display of tennis which inspired the crowed who were happily eating sausages in the shade and possibly a brownish beverage for the adults.

The big kids in the under 14s also out on a great display of strong tennis with one match going 17-15 in the third set tiebreaker. Once again a beautiful display of sportsmanship was illustrated at the end of the match and also a rest under the air conditioning. Mildura seemed to use Swan Hills under 10’s tactics of fielding mature age 14’s (birth certificates might need to be checked) as they took out most of the matches to make the end results very close!

At the end of a very long day of enjoyable tennis, socialising and sausages, Vida Tennis Swan Hill were victorious by only four matches! They got the chance to lift up the new most important trophy in tennis and bragging rights until the return leg in Mildura in term 3. All of the players and parents should be congratulated on a great day and from everyone from Vida Tennis we say a very special thanks for supporting the new competition.
